10 Tips on Choosing a Garage Door Repair Service

1. Check for local consumer awards like Angie’s List or Consumer’s Choice Award to be certain you are dealing with a reputable organization.

2. Ask for clear statement of warranties involved.

3. Ask the company for a list of customer references in your area.

4. Ask to see the company’s proof of insurance and worker’s compensation certificates. If they don’t have either you could be liable!

5. Ask for the "total minimum charges" for a service call (basic fee, travel, labor, parts, etc.)

6. Don't equate the size of a Yellow Pages ad with the reputability of the company.

7. Don't blindly believe information in an ad. Some companies have been known to publish large ads with false or misleading information.

8. Call your local Better Business Bureau to see if many complaints have been filed against a certain company.

9. If possible, be present while the work is being done. Some scam artists have been known to intentionally break parts and then replace them.

10. Don't authorize work to be done until they clearly explain the problem and the exact costs.

RED FLAGS

Address unknown. Does the business have a published physical
address in your area? Some fraudulent businesses advertise many phone numbers but have no physical address.

High Pressure. Does the technician pressure you to make a quick
decision? Does the technician claim that your family or property is in
immediate danger?

No-Name Phone ID. Do they answer the phone with their advertised
business name? If they operate under several business names, they often answer the phone with a generic response, such as, "Garage door
service."

Warranty. Beware of claims that many of the interior door parts must be
replaced in order to have a repair guarantee. For instance, in most cases
a broken counterbalance spring can be replaced without replacing the
spring shaft, cable drums, or cables. In other words, you can get a service warranty for the work performed for you without having to buy unnecessary parts.
